Trailer Bearing Failure: Warning Signs and What to Do
Learn the signs of trailer wheel-bearing trouble and the safe steps to take when a bearing fails.
Warning signs
- A hub that is noticeably hotter than others after similar use
- Grinding, rumbling or squealing at the wheel
- Wheel wobble, abnormal play, grease leakage or a damaged dust cap
- A wheel that locks up, smokes, or separates from the trailer
If a bearing fails on the road
- Slow down smoothly, pull over in a safe location, and stop towing.
- Keep clear of traffic and avoid touching a hot hub.
- Do not tow a trailer with a missing wheel or failed hub until a qualified professional assesses it.
- Inspect spindle, hub, brake components, tire, axle mounting and adjacent wheels before returning to service.
Before buying replacement parts
- Identify the axle manufacturer and capacity from its tag when available.
- Record bearing and seal part numbers from verified components, not appearance alone.
- Check the spindle for scoring, heat discoloration or deformation; damage can require axle replacement.
- Follow the manufacturer’s bearing adjustment, lubrication and fastener instructions.
